The Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Psychiatry Consultant to join a well-established team in New South Wales:

  • Permanent Part-Time (0.5FTE) Consultant - Psychiatry (CAYMHS) 
  • Permanent Part-Time (0.5FTE) Consultant - Psychiatry (Child and Adolescent Safeguarding) 

Theses positions can be partnered to become a Full-Time (1FTE) position.

Consultant - Psychiatry (CAYMHS)

The Psychiatrist is responsible for the provision of high quality specialist psychiatry services to emergency patients, inpatients and out-patients at the relevant Hospital. There will be the opportunity to lead teams virtually serving consumers in the community and inpatient settings in the local area. The role will involve the use of cutting edge telehealth technology in providing timely access to individualised and holistic assessment and care by expert multidisciplinary clinicians across a geographically dispersed LHD.  

The Psychiatrist will proactively:

• Support the development of psychiatry services

• Support and facilitate a culture of learning and best practice

• Support and develop mental health research within the department

Teaching and supervision of other staff, including Trainees in Psychiatry, is a key aspect of the role. The Psychiatrist may need to work in any of the clinical teams at the request of the Director of Mental Health/Department Head.

Consultant - Psychiatry (CAY Safeguarding)

The primary purpose of the role is to provide high quality diagnostic and consultative specialty services in acute child and adolescent psychiatry, and there may also be times where cover to the adolescent inpatient unit will be required.   The Psychiatrist will consider the role of psychotropic medication, physical health, and legal frameworks in assessment and care provision but is not limited by these frameworks and provides a service to the person in their context.

Health Service

Just 90mins south of Sydney, this health district provides health services for around 400,000 people. It is one of the region’s largest employers with a workforce of more than 8,500 staff operating eight hospital sites and providing community health services from approximately 58 locations across the region. This is a short stay unit, primarily for crisis intervention for consumers with low to medium acuity mental health problems; and who are likely to require only a brief period (up to 48 hours) in hospital.

Essential Criteria

  • Specialist registration or eligible for specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and/or equivalent specialist recognition.
  • Membership of the Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (RANZCP) and/or other equivalent specialist recognition as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  • Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high-quality services, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.

The Package

• Base Salary: $186,241 - $251,618 (dependent on experience)

• Expected Salary of $262,376 to $354,479 with allowances.
