A Northern NSW hospital requires a Registrar/PHO in Psychiatry from 12/08/2019 to 23/08/2019.

The locum registrar in the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre (PECC) is responsible for assessing patients presenting with acute mental issues and generating a management plan. This involves either discharge with follow up arranged or admitting the patient to hospital. A consultant is available for advice by telephone 24 hours a day and usually in person in business hours. There are also four short stay “PECC beds” to manage as part of this role.

PECC is a busy unit and is the “front door” to the 100 bed Mental Health Centre. PECC takes patients who self-present, come with community mental health staff, are referred from the adjacent General Hospital Emergency Department (a hospital which has a tertiary toxicology service) or are brought in by emergency services. Key relations are with the PECC Clinical Director (Dr Sujatha Venkatesh), PECC nursing staff, the Mental Health Centre Nurse Manager, fellow medical staff and (after 5pm) with the on call consultant.

After 5pm the doctor/s in PECC are also responsible for any medical or psychiatric emergencies in the Mental Health Centre (which includes an 8 bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit – PICU). This is not a large component of the role but will be a part of the locum registrar’s role, particularly if they are the only doctor in the Mental Health Centre after hours. Medical support (a rapid response) is available from the adjacent general hospital.
