Weekday day shifts;
are from 0800-1800. This is a senior supervisor type shift. You will be working with (if fully staffed) an intern, resident (PGY2) and possibly an international SRMO all who require level 1-2 supervision. There will also be medical students around who operate as interns and need level 1+ supervision. While the inpatient wards are staffed with resident teams at these times and can assist with early disposition from ED, it is also the time of highest volume of presentations. This day shift senior role is responsible for departmental flow and organising and overseeing any procedures, referrals or complex cases which may have been deferred from the previous night shift or weekend when resources are limited. There is also the expectation of taking on your own case load. I would recommend this shift for an experienced primary care rural locum with good organisation, common sense and comfort with medical uncertainty and ability to juggle many tasks and supervisees at the same time.
With every new JMO rotation (every 10 weeks) we roster an extra doctor to weekday dayshifts for several weeks. This is a role more suited to first timers and more junior locums as they benefit from the supervision and orientation provided by the weekday senior.
If you are being offered weekday dayshift clarify with your agency if these are the senior supervisor or jnr. helping hand shifts to avoid frustration.
Weekday afternoon shifts:
are from 1200-2200h. There are 6 hours overlap with the end of morning shift and 2 hours with the start of night shift. You will however be the senior most doctor in hospital from 1800-2000h and are responsible for the Emergency department during this time. This role is suitable for a PGY4+ doctor with basic ALS skills and ability to sort a busy waiting room out. While not primarily supervising JMOs, your assistance with this is appreciated. There is a JMO on the wards taking care of clinical reviews and for the most part is supervised by the on call specialists and another junior
ED based CMO/locum. You will have access to the on call specialists but they will all be on remote call. Typically you would take handover from departing morning staff of any patients who remain in the ED and assist / supervise the junior CMO.
