This position may be filled with a more junior doctor (PGY3+). Based in the ED, you will see ED patients independently but with the support of a more senior ED MO. From 1630h onwards your role will also be to support the ward based JMO (rostered until 2000h weekdays and 1600 weekends) and until the end of your shift have primary responsibility for all ward calls. For the duration of your shift, this position is responsible for responding to the MET pager (rapid response) across the entire hospital and you will be the senior most (and after 2000h the only) doctor routinely responding to these calls. You will have the supervision of remote on call consultant staff for ward duties and the ED senior CMO for ED duties. Ward duties may involve assessing and managing patients in HDU/ ICU, liaising and escalating to on call consultants, organising transfers of critically ill patients. When ward duties are concluded it is expected that you return to the ED and continue with general duties there.
In the event of having to enact our COVID Surge Plan, this Medical SRMO position may be redeployed to the Acute COVID ward and/or the COVID ICU with a change in rostered hours to include evening shifts (1600-0030hrs) and night shifts (0000-0830hrs). COVID positive patients in ICU will remain under the care of the General Physician, with day to day care directed by the Intensivist. Previous experience and/or an interest in critical care is desirable but not essential; training will be provided if required.
