The Position

DMO (Duty Medical Officer)

The DMO team is made of highly skilled and experienced GPs who have worked across remote health and rural generalist medicine throughout their careers. As a dispersed team, working in shifts and based locally, nationally and internationally, we facilitate call taking, clinical management planning and complex retrieval logistics, with particular attention to the remote and Indigenous context and the challenges of clinic staffing. The team is highly supportive and passionate about remote primary care and the interface of that with acute medicine.

Health Service

The DMO (Duty Medical Officer) Service operates as a 24-hour telemedicine decision support and emergency retrieval activation service for patients across the Top End. Accessible to clinicians in NT Health and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services the service coordinates remote GP advice and management and patient retrievals. The service works closely with St John Ambulance, Top End Hospitals and is increasingly involved in emergency responses due to weather or logistics issues. The service fields 1700 calls per month with 36% of these resulting in retrieval for care. In the last 12 months the service has undergone a redesign program and been critical in its support for the COVID outbreak.

The Location

The role reports to the Medical Director, Primary Health Care Retrievals who leads strategic management and planning of the service including its integration with other elements of the health system. The role is embedded within the Medical Unit of PPHC with other clinical and administrative staff. There is clear interface and possibility of combined roles in support of remote Top End Communities including through program support, remote visits , short clinical placements for interstate DMOs as a resident RMP or Darwin based FIFO, Drive In Drive Out as well Prison Health Service. DMOs undergo a 2-3 week supported training program which includes training in call taking and logistics.

Essential Criteria

We are looking for an energetic, passionate person who loves working with teams and solving tricky problems to achieve great outcomes. You will have current rural generalist /rural GP emergency skills and ideally you will have worked in NT or in Aboriginal Health primary care.

The Package

Several exciting opportunities exist to join our team of Rural Medical Practitioners that can be based in Darwin or Interstate. Participate in the 24/7 on call roster providing pre-hospital acute and emergency care to Remote Top End Communities. The generous remuneration package for this position includes the following: Professional Training Allowance $13,182 - $19,770, Professional Development leave 10 days, Sole Responsibility Allowance $36 per hour, Senior RMP Allowance $26,361, Hospital salary packaging $9,010, Superannuation, shift penalties/leave loading and 6 weeks recreation leave if based in NT.
